Pre-registration will close Sep 17 2018

2018 ==>> Sep 20 2018
Thursday – start time 4 am

Based on what I am seeing on the news and weather, the 2018 TC1200k will not start on the scheduled date of 04:00 Sep 20, 2018 due to safety and logistic reasons!
Currently due to intensity, rainfall, power outages, potential road closures, accommodation restrictions, etc of/caused by Hurricane Florence within all of NC, it is very doubtful that even a week of postponement would allow a safe Grand Brevet in NC with the conditions over the next couple weeks unless the storm track changes drastically from the current forecast.
Also the events scheduled for Oct 6 2018 may be canceled or postponed, depending conditions and routes.
If I have internet and power I will post any updates via email, Facebook and on the event website
I will be glad to try to work with those that have pre-paid for the 2018 TC1200k,
Please contact me via email with your preferences.
Below are some of the options for those who already paid for the 2018 TC1200k.
- credit towards 2019 CS1200 May 9 2019 (still to be approved by RUSA)
- credit towards various 2019 Brevets run by High Point RBA
- credit towards various 2018 Brevets scheduled for Oct 6 2018, 600k or 1000k — provided routes are usable on that date or 1 week later and can be finished prior to midnight Oct 15 2018
- refund minus any fees incurred by BFL transferring funds to you — If you request a refund it may take some time depending on banking systems and moving of funds to you, please also note that a small portion of funds have been spent that cannot be recovered during scouting routes and preparing for the 2018 TC1200k

Bicycle for Life

In the last several days Hurricane Florence stalled some and changed track considerably. These changes have affected the route stability due to flooding, potential road closures, hotel available along route and throughout the state, power outages and the inability to predict how anything will be in the next week or even the next two weeks. Much of NC may get 5 to 20+ inches of rain and a lot of wind.
At this point there is a very high possibility that 2018 TC1200k will be canceled for the safety of the participants and volunteers
Please carefully consider your travel plans and be safe wherever you are or go.
More info will posted as available

Info will be posted as it develops for the 2018 TC 1200

There will be conciderable climbing for the first 400k (about 16,000 ft) in 2018, about 30,000 ft total climbing.
Please go to the prelim route which is almost finalized for more details on climbing.

This route has some mods from 2011 and some new areas for riders to explore in 2018!

For 2018 TC1200 the route is split into 3 sections close to 400k each. Many people who have ridden in the past can ride it that way.

For those that want to split up the last section, Lumberton is really the only option for hotels

BFL will cover the Friday night Shallotte area hotel only, The current plan is to use the Comfort Inn only, and must check out by lunch on Saturday unless I can arrange a later checkout time for a few rooms. Control closes at 13:25 at Shallotte

Riders will need to make their own reservations and cover the cost for Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday nights if they plan to sleep somewhere those nights

There will be a control room in Lumberton at the Super 8 Saturday night for riders to stop at so staff can see how they are doing.

General TC1200 info

Taste Carolina 1200 route has been designed so that participants will get to see a variety of terrain and scenery while riding in North Carolina and some in Virginia

There have been considerable changes to the route for 2018 but sections may be similar to previous years.

The Taste Carolina 1200 is Sep 2018 and it will be at least a good event.
Packet pickup will be Wednesday afternoon/early-evening

The start will be Thursday morning. We're still working on the details and fine tuning route and staring location. The start will be in Greensboro near the central part of NC close to the GSO Airport NC-68 and I-40

There will be a section into the Mountains of NC, back thru the start area, then to Coastal plains of NC/SC

For 2018 we plan to have some rooms for riders at the planned 1 overnight controls.

There is NO 2018 Jersey planned and is not included unless there are enough request for one

Thanks for your interest in the 2018 TC1200k

Prelim map • 2018 TC1200

The map posted below is the preliminary map for the 2018 TC1200 route.
The route may change slightly to accommodate construction which is seemingly constantly changing, poor road conditions, etc. so the route will be updated in the RWGps link as it is changed

For 2018 you'll have an opportunity to taste the Mountains of NC as well as the coastal NC/SC and sandhill areas of NC on your ride

Climbing on the 2018 route will be mostly in the first third and last quarter of the route

Drop Bags

For riders who are registered and riding the TC1200

The drop bags are planned to be taken to the official overnight Main hotels/controls only for you. The bags will be picked up at or before the control closing time or near the time when the last rider leaves the control. The bags will be brought to the finish control during the last and may not get there until near the end of the 1200k time limit.

Please do not put anything in your drop bag that you cannot do without for a few days just in case we miss you or cannot get them to you at the finish for some reason.

Important !!! Note:
If you do not wait at the finish for your drop bags, they can be shipped to you at your expense, BFL will not pay for shipping of items to you!

BFL will not be responsible for your drop bags or items in your drop bags.

Drop bags can taken to the Main Controls

No Wheels, bike frames, large items, etc.

Since there are many styles and riding habits of riders that will be participating in the event,
- if you need to sleep some other place than a main control where TC1200 has rooms reserved
for a rider. Riders must decide where they plan to sleep so we can plan for that.

For the 2018 TC1200

We plan to have rooms for registered riders to rest at 495 mile main sleep control

riders will need to reserve and pay for their own rooms as noted below

  1. at the start / finish
  2. at the Thursday night 254 mile control
  3. if you need to sleep some other place than a main sleep control where TC1200 has rooms reserved for a rider
  4. if you are not willing to share a room with another registered rider at sleep controls
  5. Riders who want or need to split up the last section might consider reserving a room in Lumberton NC mile 596 at the Super 8 or one of the other hotels at that point on the route

We are working with Hotels at the start/finish and hopefully will set aside a block of rooms which will allow riders to reserve/book a place to stay as needed at a good reduced rate.

So please make your Wednesday and finish nights reservations soon.
TC1200 will have a staff room at start/finish and a storage room for the weekend at the start/finish hotel. We will also be using the staff room on Wednesday night for packet pickup if it is raining or you are late arriving.

For Wednesday we will have food arrangements planned, etc. either in the parking lot or a nearby restaurant.

Start will be from the host hotel or a parking lot close to host hotel

Please do not park at the host hotel unless you have a room there all weekend

Start - Sleep Inn Airport
7 Sharps Airpark Court
Greensboro, NC, 27409
(336) 931-1272

We only have a small block of rooms set aside for Wednesday night only, so please mention, the bike ride to get the rate for our group. You may want to check online for a better rate for Wednesday night

Wednesday Meal for riders

There will be a cookout or arrangements for a rider meal on Wednesday at about 16:00 afternoon with food, snacks and drinks until about 7pm Wednesday evening. Everyone has really liked the cookout gathering for the TC1200K events

Meals along the route

Meals along the route are the responsibility of each rider. Many controls are stores and stores may be available between controls, many of which will be indicated on the cue sheets when posted.

  • Some food or snacks and liquid will be available at the TC1200 staffed main controls
  • We will have a variety of food and drinks in the main control rooms we'll use
  • Riders need to buy, get or carry their own food along the route. There are many stores at reasonable intervals along much of the route and many will be open when most riders are traveling on route.
  • If you plan to ride straight through quickly and not stop for much sleep on the TC1200, there may be some long sections at night where there are not any stores open, so please plan accordingly

The 2018 design will be a similar color scheme, but with slight changes in design elements,

The TC1200 Jersey will not be included for 2018 TC1200 event unless you pay the extra $75 to $120 when you send in your payment.

If you get a jersey, we hope to have it in your packet, provided your payment is received soon enough to get it printed. Otherwise it will be shipped to the TC1200 participants after it is printed.

Additional jerseys may be ordered, if order is placed early enough. All jerseys ordered after Feb 15 may be delayed considerably! Orders for the jersey may be placed before and after event. A link for sizing will be posted and size will be confirmed prior placing the jersey order.

We would like to have matching items such as shorts, vest, arm warmers, etc. but cost to produce makes that unlikely. Please contact us if interested.

The basic price of an extra short sleeve jersey will be $75 to $120 plus shipping(as needed). A full price list for all items, including options may be posted later.

Orders may not be available after the event is done and we have gone home!

The approximate design for the 2018 jersey will be posted when finished

Below was the design for the 2014 jersey
